Honesty, really good?

I’ve been thinking about ‘honesty‘ lately. You’ve probably heard enough of the cliché that living in Turkey will change your beliefs in what is right and wrong and what is logical and illogical. I’m still trying to absorb and digest all the confusions. I had so many ups and downs last week that I didn’t have any motivations to write or cook. Thanks to that, I discovered some hidden gem restaurants. The death of my lovely canary who used to wake us me at 7am with beautiful songs to start with, then came the news of my new nephew on the way, which isn’t entirely happy news as it should be…. and then, my good intentions and hopes got quashed by an unexpected tyranny, my naivety, and came the news of moving house. So I rummaged through my tiny bookshelf – nomads don’t have such a thing – and picked up Rumi’s poems to make sense of the things that had happened. I believe that life is fair no matter how badly it treats you from …

When Turkey meets Poland?

I’ve just come back from a short sea break in the Aegean sea. I’ve posted some photos on my FB page during the trip as I was feeling guilty for keeping the readers in suspense, but here I am back to my sweet home and to where I’d left off. What makes a great cuisine? I’ve put this question to many chefs and each time I get “mixing” for an answer, taking freshness as a base. Many chefs say that they’re always pressured, if not inspired, to travel overseas and come up with new dishes with new tastes. It’s so true when you look at the history of world cuisines. The time of homogenous cuisine has long gone as more and more people travel and experience diverse flavours. Imagine the world where everyone eats the same food and all the restaurants cook the same dishes. B.O.R.I.N.G. Life is too short to eat the same food twice. Inspiration is in the hand of chefs who care about what we eat. When I walk in the streets …

Halloumi Spinach Stack with Garlicky Beetroot Hummus

Ok, so I mentioned about detoxing and getting back to normal routines and eating in the previous post, right? I’m not really talking about the detox diet that women so often religiously talk about; I simply mean going off alcohol for a while, at least until this Friday because on Saturday I will be tasting some wines with my foodie friends. Before Nice, Mr.O and I tried to eat up everything that might go spoilt, but we couldn’t finish the cooked beetroots. I was meant to char-grill a bunch of capsicums to store but didn’t get around to do it. So it was the time. I love char-grilling them over the stove, though some people prefer the oven because of the mess it makes. But this pan, which I accidentally found while looking for a heat diffuser for Persian rice, happened to be what Turkish people use. You can char-grill any veggies, even seafood! So at lunchtime, even though I was not fully in the mood for cooking and taking photos, I couldn’t resist it when I …

Beetroot Bulgur Risotto

When I resumed my food blogging, I promised to myself to make it look more professional with better quality photos taken in bright sunlight instead of under the dim yellow light in my kitchen, which means planning the cooking and shooting beforehand and cooking in the daytime, preferably with the help of Mr.O during the weekend. I was getting tired of the yellow blurry photos I had taken over the years. But I broke the promise the moment I posted my first recipe with usual dark and yellow coloured photos. Well, I haven’t yet found a solution to this problem and I would very much appreciate useful tips on that issue. Good news is, though, that with the change of calendar year, I’m beginning to think the matter in a different perspective, that is to say, I’m going to put more importance on the true fact that food is an essential part of life and it’s all about the process of cooking, eating and sharing instead of being swayed and challenged by beautiful photography and …
